Some find it on their own.

A select few learn it at expensive workshops.

But so many are left to figure it out alone.

For the past three years, we’ve served universities, colleges, nonprofits, and associations as The Clareo Group.
As of November 1, 2025, we’re Third Rail Leadership—a name that reflects the boldness, courage, and conviction required of 21st-century leaders.
We continue to serve the same kinds of institutions—and leaders at all levels— with leadership development programs, coaching, and workshops.
Third Rail Leadership prepares people who lead people—regardless of titles or seniority—to plug into their values, connect with their team, and build the momentum their department needs.

What's changed?

Just the name and look.

Our look: Bolder. More electric.

Our name: Honesty about the courage it takes to plug into your personal power as a leader in the 21st century.

What's the same?

The programs you know: 10 ½ Lessons for Leaders, Powerful Questions² (PQ2), Coaching Circles, the annual IMPACT conference, and keynotes.

The newsletter: The Permission Slip is now The Leadership LiveWire. It still lands in your inbox every Thursday.

Our commitment: helping faculty, staff, executives, students, and associations develop leaders at all levels, instead of preparing only a select few.

The people behind the work: led by founder Carole Chabries, PhD, with the same trusted partners and facilitators.

WHY THIRD RAIL?

Third rails have a bad rap.
In politics, they’re hot-button issues that can end your career.
But in transit, the third rail powers the entire system.

Even though they're dangerous, third rails power 34 million rides every workday in the US.

Because of their high voltage, third rails are designed to keep people safe.

Sometimes they run above the train. Sometimes they're embedded at ground level. And sometimes, third rails only activate when a train sits directly on top of it.

We know not to touch the third rail.
And we trust that someone knows how it works. Where it is and how to harness it.

How to make power connect the pieces in a large, complex system.
Third rails aren't just dangerous.
They're designed

As a leader, you are a third rail: you have immense power to guide and connect people, places, and ideas within your institution.

You have choices about how to use that power.
Including when, and why, to turn it off.

You are your own source of power.

Be your own third rail.

The Clareo Group was the right name to start with. Clareo is Latin for shine, and the firm's initial focus was on preparing women leaders to draw on their inner strength to lead. But things evolved, our client base grew and changed, and I felt pulled to a brand that better captures the spark and energy of leadership development done differently. Third Rail Leadership reflects that. A ton of power, and the spark of risk that power also carries with it.
Nope. Same programs, same team, same mission. If you’ve seen us listed as The Clareo Group, it’s still us—just with a new name.
Yes. All our past and current programs live here under Third Rail Leadership. You’ll find 10 ½ Lessons for Leaders, PQ2, and Coaching Circles right where you left them.
